Fountain & Water Feature Leak Detection

Water walls, koi ponds, and outdoor water features can develop leaks that are hard to trace without specialist equipment. The leak may come from the shell, lining, or buried supply and return lines. ALD uses pressure testing, dye testing, and acoustic equipment to assess water feature leaks. This service is offered selectively, so contact us to confirm availability for your area and feature type.

What Is Fountain & Water Feature Leak Detection?

Water feature leak detection involves isolating and identifying the source of water loss from ponds, water walls, channel features, and decorative water systems — both the basin or lining and the associated plumbing supply and return circuits.

The most common sources of water feature leaks are cracks in the basin lining, failed penetrations around pump housings and pipe fittings, underground supply or return line failures, and evaporation that has been misattributed to a structural leak.

Signs You May Have This Type of Leak

  1. The feature requires topping up more frequently than usual

  2. Water levels drop even when the pump is off

  3. There are wet patches around the perimeter of the feature

  4. Water pressure to the feature has noticeably reduced

  5. The feature is losing water faster than comparable past performance

  6. Nearby plants or soil areas are persistently damp without irrigation

FAQs

  • Is this service the same as pool leak detection?

It uses similar methods — pressure testing, dye testing, and acoustic equipment. The difference is in the complexity of the feature and the accessibility of the plumbing. Water features are often custom-built and may have buried, combined, or non-standard pipe configurations. Contact us to discuss your specific feature before booking.

  • Can you detect a leak in a concrete pond?

Yes. Dye testing and acoustic scanning can be used on concrete basins, fibreglass features, and pond liner systems. Concrete basins are particularly prone to hairline cracking and joint failures over time, especially in areas with soil movement or frost cycles.

  • Do you drain the feature to inspect it?

Not as standard. We aim to conduct detection with the feature operating where possible. Some specific test scenarios may require the water level to be lowered, but a full drain is rarely necessary for initial assessment.

  • Is this available for commercial properties?

Yes. We work with commercial clients, councils, and public space managers on decorative water features in lobbies, public plazas, parks, and hospitality venues. Commercial features are assessed under the same framework as residential, with reporting adapted to the scope and complexity of the installation.
