Burst underground water pipe leak at an Australian job site

Water Leak Detection

A hidden water leak can cost you money long before you see damage. If your meter runs when everything is off, or your water bill rises without explanation, ALD can help find the source. We use acoustic listening devices on internal pipelines, pressure testing, and thermal imaging to locate leaks while keeping access work targeted and avoiding unnecessary damage. You receive a written report showing the location so a qualified contractor can repair the right spot.

Targeted detection for leaks behind tiles, underground, inside walls, and under concrete.

What Is Water Leak Detection?

Water leak detection is the process of locating the source of an undetected water loss using specialist technology before repair or access work begins. It gives the repair team a precise location to work from, so any required opening, drilling, or digging can be kept as targeted as practical.

The most common causes of hidden water leaks are corrosion in older copper pipes, root intrusion in underground lines, joint failures from ground movement, and faulty waterproofing around wet areas. A water leak detection specialist uses acoustic sensors, pressure testing, and thermal imaging to isolate the leak's location regardless of where the pipe runs.

Signs You May Have This Type Of Leak

  1. Your water bill has increased unexpectedly with no change in usage

  2. Your water meter is running when all taps and appliances are off

  3. There are damp or discoloured patches on walls, ceilings, or floors

  4. You can hear water running somewhere in the house when nothing is on

  5. Mould or mildew is appearing in areas that don't get wet from normal use

  6. The ground in your yard is soft, wet, or sinking in one area

  7. You notice an unusual drop in water pressure throughout the home

How We Find Your Water Leak

Most of our leak detection work is non-invasive. In some commercial and domestic situations, we may need to drill into floors or driveways, or dig a small access hole after we have narrowed down the leak location. We only do this with permission.

FAQs

  • How long does a water leak detection inspection take?

Most residential inspections take between 1 and 3 hours depending on property size and the complexity of your pipe system. If we're working on an older home with multiple suspected areas, allow up to half a day. Commercial and strata properties vary significantly — we'll give you an estimate during your booking call.

  • Will you need to break anything to find the leak?

Most of our leak detection work is non-invasive. In some commercial and domestic situations, we may need to drill into floors or driveways, or dig a small access hole after we have narrowed down the leak location. We only do this with permission.

  • Do I need to turn my water off before you arrive?

In most cases, no. Our acoustic equipment works best when the water is on and under pressure, as this amplifies the sound signature of the leak. In some specific test scenarios (pressure testing or tracer gas), we may need to briefly isolate a section — your technician will walk you through this before starting.

  • Can you detect leaks under concrete?

Absolutely! It's our specialty! Acoustic listening, tracer gas, and acoustic and electromagnetic locating techniques can help locate leaks beneath concrete slabs, driveways, and paths. This helps a qualified contractor open the smallest practical area instead of breaking large sections speculatively.

  • Is the detection report accepted by insurers?

In most cases, yes. Our written report details the leak type, location, method of detection, and our findings. Many home and landlord insurers accept this as part of a leak claim. We recommend confirming with your insurer before booking if an insurance claim is your primary goal.
