Old School Buildings: Galvanized Iron Supply Lines at High Risk
Many state school buildings date from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Original infrastructure-including water supply lines-is often still in service. Galvanized iron pipes, standard at that time, rust from the inside out. Corrosion creates pinhole leaks that are often invisible until significant water loss has accumulated. A school built in 1965 with original galvanized iron supply lines is now 60 years old. Rust is not a future risk-it is present and active. These leaks are often silent and invisible, located under buildings, in wall cavities, or under concrete slabs.
