Why Your Water Bill Suddenly Increased

A higher bill is one of the clearest signs that water is moving outside the intended plumbing path. A calm check of the meter, fixtures, and recent usage can narrow down the source quickly.

Check the Meter First

Turn off taps, appliances, irrigation, and pool top-up systems, then watch the water meter. Movement while everything is off usually means water is still flowing somewhere on the property.

Take a photo of the meter, wait 15 minutes, and compare the reading. This gives you a simple record before calling a plumber, insurer, strata manager, or leak detection team.

Look for Common Household Causes

A running toilet, leaking garden tap, faulty irrigation valve, hot water relief valve, or pool auto-fill system can use a large amount of water before visible damage appears inside the home.

  • Listen for cisterns refilling between flushes.
  • Check outside taps and hose fittings.
  • Review irrigation schedules after weather changes.
  • Inspect hot water overflow lines.

Find Signs of Hidden Leaks

Damp skirting boards, musty smells, warm floor patches, water stains, and low pressure can point to water moving behind walls, under floors, or below slabs.

Non-invasive detection helps locate the likely leak area before surfaces are opened.
